A New Year ... Sorta

How many "New Year's" opportunities do we really have??  There's the obvious January 1st, but then for people like us who work for the government, there is the fiscal new year as well. That's when we get the new insurance cards, and the paycheck comes on July 1 instead of June 30th. (This is because some genius in the Colorado government a few years ago discovered that they could balance the budget one year by pushing all of the state employee paychecks into the next fiscal year. . . . Enough said. If I start rambling about politics, this post will get way more off track than it already is.)

Anyway, THIS time of year is another "new year" because, of course, we're all starting a new school year!!  And yes, I do mean WE. All of the Conger's are currently enrolled in school full time. Larry is the only one who doesn't actually attend class, write papers, or take tests ... but we'll give him credit for participation in the overall process.

KIX 
Highlights after 2 weeks as a high school sophomore are:
    * A great start on his first writing assignment which is sure to make Mrs. Koester cry.
    *Landing the roll of King Louis XVI in a mock trial in World History ... he has to take the stand tomorrow and face the verdict.
    *Tried out for the school play ... don't know what part he landed yet.
    *Got the girl he wanted to take to Homecoming to say yes already.
    *Home opener of the Merino Rams football season was a big win against a very worthy oponent. Kix saw quite a bit of action for a young pup.  Pictures will be forthcoming.  :)

 ACE 
Ace is a leading contributor to any and all discussions that happen within the 8th grade class at Merino. He has an opinion, and he's not afraid to share it. He is doing awesome in his classes after 2 weeks - we're hoping that he's building momentum that will carry him all the way through to valedictorian of the Class of 2016! .... OK, maybe salutatorian, but still ... He's gonna rock their expectations out of the park!
     Ace dodges the girls by completely ignoring all of the texts in his phone for DAYS ....  His football season is also off and running. He is one of the few 8th graders on the team and will get to learn a lot this year. He ran in the only touchdown they had in their first game of the season against Haxtun. He also loves his dirt bike.  :)

CADE
Cade would be doing so well in school if he would just learn to read! ... totally kidding.  The kid takes a book everywhere he goes.  He has something like 95 AR points in the first few weeks of school (4th graders only need 30 points for the whole quarter to earn an A grade ...)   Crazy kid.  :) 
Cade can be a little deceiving because he is usually such a kind, gentle guy that you don't expect his honery side when it shows up.  :)  He  enjoys sports, music, and dancing.  He has his first football game of the season on Saturday - don't know for sure what position(s) he'll be at yet - but we're looking forward to it!

And then there's Taysa . . . . Sometimes I worry that some kind of irreparable damage may be happening simply from being the caboose of this very busy crazy crew. But, then I think of my own sweet baby sister, and I realize that she's the cream of the crop. So ... Taysa will likely be the cream of our crop as well.  :)  We all adore her, and she's got enough spunk to hold her own in the complicated worlds of the 2nd grade class room, the elementary playground, and a house with 3 big brothers.  But, her favorite hangout is outside with the animals!

Just some Conger kid name trivia: the boys all have a one syllable first name, and the girls only spell their middle names with one letter. Yeah ... kinda immature probably. That's what happens when you get married young and start naming kids when you're still a kid yourself.  haha  :)
I started this blog when Rissy went away and left us. :(  Thank goodness for texting, cell phones, skype and facebook! 
She LOVES college and is doing great.

I am in love with this new song by Sara Bareilles. Thank you Sara for your positive creativity!!   As you can see, I originally posted this when I first heard the song. It is now Dec. 1st, and Brave has become pretty popular as the year has gone on, and even saw a recent spike in the charts when there was a fuss from some fans that Katy Perry had "stolen" from Brave when she did her hit song "Roar."  haha Anyway, there have been lots of covers of this song lately, and several music videos that warmed my heart.  But, I saw this one today, and it had me in tears.  This is what life is all about.  Thanks again Sarah for inspiring the goodness in so many people this year!

Virginia is entirely too far away. . .

Well . . . She's really gone. Her room has a freshly shampooed carpet, thanks to Grandma. Her bed is there, stripped of the green and blue bedding she loved, and there are a ton of empty hangers in her tiny little cabinet that we called a closet. Some of the posters are still on the wall - thank goodness - because some small things like that make me feel like she'll be back in a few days . . . ?? Not. Love you Rissy! Thanks for sharing 18 years with us side by side. Even though I don't have the backseat driver view that I've enjoyed so much, I'm so excited for this next chapter in your life. I know you've got amazing things coming your way - and I will be cheering you on with my whole heart - just from a different view.

My 7 recipes

**(Dec. 10th) OK - I lied- it's 8 recipes. Taysa and I made sugar cookies yesterday, and I realized I left those out of this list - so technically it's 9 if you count the recipe for frosting..... I only use 7 recipes. I don't only cook 7 things. It's just that I don't use recipes. For example, I make spaghetti with meat sauce, chilli, different soups, enchiladas, crock pot stuff, etc.  but I just throw things together and shake in the spices. There is rarely a recipe involved.   Baking, on the other hand, does require measuring stuff.  During the first few years of our marriage, I tried lots of different recipes, mostly ones that I got from my mom. I tweaked them a bit early on, but now I pretty much use these 7, and that's just what I bake. All the time. Chocolate Chip Cookies These win everyone over. Every time.
